What can a passenger list tell you? Quite a bit. Herman managed to travel to Antwerp, Belgium, to depart on December 28, 1903, and he arrived in New York City on January 8, 1904, just as his naturalization papers reported.
Herman Handler is on line 19 of the following passenger manifest.
New York, Passenger and Crew Lists (including Castle Garden and Ellis Island), 1820-1957 (Provo, UT, USA, Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2010), Ancestry.com, Year: 1904; Arrival: New York, New York; Microfilm Serial: T715, 1897-1957; Microfilm Roll: Roll 0425; Line: 19; Page Number: 52. Record for Hermann Håndler.
Herman Håndler, age 22, male, unmarried, reported that he was last living in Hungary, and was "of the Hebrew race." He last lived in Sorince[?] and was on his way to Detroit, Michigan.
(The entry in the column for "Last Residence: Province, City, or Town" doesn't make sense, but perhaps he was reporting the region he was from, which at the time was Szerém.)
His passage was paid for by his brother. He had $3 with him ($9 was crossed off) and his brother's name and address is given as Adolf Handler, P. Box 1038, Russell Str., Detroit, Mich.
This source doesn't provide much evidence that Herman Handler is related to my husband's family, but together with other sources may help to place this Handler family in the extended family tree. This Adolf is not the great-grandfather of my husband. He never came to America; in fact, he died in 1900 and I shared his death record at Adolf Handler's Death Record.
